Cult of Mac

I always laugh when PC fanboy’s get on their rant about how overpriced macs are. How you can get so much more hardware for less money if you buy a PC. Hey there’s no debate there. But they always seem to miss the point completely. Macs are about total user experience. People buy them because they want a computer that works. They want a nice operating system. They want good tech support. Yes they even want a pretty looking machine. What’s wrong with that? What’s wrong with any of that?

I don’t know… [holds palms up in the air] kind of sounds like a pretty smart thing to me.

Hey I don’t have anything against PC’s. I’m typing this on my desktop PC right now. My Macbook sitting right in front of me. I’m a gadget geek and a computer nerd. I love all of it and I’m proud to say I’m a member of the cult of mac. So why do PC fanboys get their panties in a bunch when it comes to macs? I have three theories:

1. They’re retarded
2. They’re narrow sighted and can only see the bang for the buck on hardware and nothing else.
3. [And this is probably the most accurate] They secretly want to be mac users themselves but are afraid of what their fellow redneck circlejerk brothers might say.

Don’t get me wrong, mac users aren’t better then anyone else. They’re just smarter, more sophisticated, have taste, a sense of style and great in bed.

  1. I am a recent convert to the cult of Mac.

I think the biggest issue that PC people have is they remember the ooooold, the harder to use macs that plagued public schools (and still do in some places) and that is their basis of complaint. I was open minded about it and I was extremely surprised on how easy Macs are now.

  2. Macs are awesome.  They have great software, are durable, and they make sense.  Did I just lose something because of a power failure?  Oh wait, let me check the Time Machine!  There it is!  Hey, I need to calculate something really fast.  Oh look, there’s a single button on the keyboard that brings up a handy dashboard with a calculator, a calendar, a clock and your local weather all in one convenient program!  And now I want to shut down my computer really fast.  All I have to do is hit the power button and “enter”, and it shuts off without any problems.  Wow, technology that makes sense and is user friendly!  What a concept!

  3. I’m a PC user who has never owned a Mac, but I intend to at some point.  New Macs come with so much cool software (GarageBand and the rest of the iLife suite, for example) that I personally feel the extra expense is perfectly justified.  I’ve never understood the Us vs. Them mentality that grips American thinking so relentlessly; you can’t like PCs and Macs?  You can’t like action movies and art flicks?  It’s just weird.

  4. I hate mac’s I think they’re the dumbest thing out there. It’s made for people that don’t know anything about computers, and also professional designers. and the rest of the 90% of the market the average-above average users are left out. And that’s why the P.C. is way better. If you like to play games, you can’t do it on a Mac. besides World of Warcraft and Starcraft, the mac has virtually no games for it. and what about upgrading? thow it away and buy a whole new one.

They say you don’t need to worry about viruses on Mac’s, but that’s just shows how little things are made for macs software, programs, and what not, they don’t even make viruses for it. hahaha.

I really hate how they have their stupid one button to click for the mouse. It’s the dumbest thing ever. I know the new ones have the second button hidden under there, but I don’t think the macbooks have it.

I really hate macs but even with all that said, lately i’ve actually been thinking about getting one. Only for the soul fact that the new iPhoto 09 looks super sweet. and I want it. hehe. final cut pro is also nice too, but thats like 700 bucks, and for that price I can just stick to using that one at the public access television editing rooms.

but yeah, the new iphoto roxxx soo hard that it out weighs all the horribleness of a mac and makes it bareable.

Not at all. They are for most people. Nobody is left out.

If you like to play game then buy an Xbox or a PS3. PC gaming is falling out of favor anyway. Of if you prefer install windows on the mac and play games that way. No reason you can’t dual boot. That’s why Apple made Boot Camp so it’s super easy have OSX and Windows on the same machine.

As for upgrading. Really what do you need to upgrade? I upgraded my hard drive and my ram in my macbook. By the time you start swapping out motherboards and video cards you might as well just get a whole new system. I work with several people who are working on a four or five year old mac. My macbook I’m typing this on is two years old. When it comes time to upgrade you just sell it. Macs keep their value better then any other computer.

There is a ton of software on a mac. The great thing is a lot of it is really nice stuff. Things you just can’t find on Windows. As for no viruses, that’s just a bonus for now. Check out macheist or macbundle to get just a sliver of an idea what’s out there.

I really hate how they have their stupid one button to click for the mouse. It’s the dumbest thing ever. I know the new ones have the second button hidden under there, but I don’t think the macbooks have it.

I hate that to. Apple sucks when it comes to mice. Luckily you can use any mouse you want and steermouse is an awesome program for tweaking it.
The macbook does have right click. Either two finder tap or ctrl+click. I like two finger tap. Two finger scrolling is also really nice. You can do it anywhere on the trackpad, unlike PC laptops where you have to scroll on the far right dedicated area.

Yeah iPhoto is pretty nice. I still prefer Picasa on the mac. But most of the time I end up using the spacebar preview in the finder. Such a nice feature. Seriously man you can hate them all you want but use one as your daily machine for a month and you’ll wonder how you ever used anything else.

  6. @TornadoChaser@momaroo – Yeah they definitely have come a long way. They had some issues there in the ’90’s. The smartest thing they did was switch to Intel hardware.

But I think price is still the the biggest issue with most people. They see a higher price and they see it running something other then windows and it turns them off. Little do they know.

  7. @mysterylad – Software is definitely the major selling point. But not just the big software like iLife, Office, Adobe CS4, Logic, ect. There are so many little apps out there that are just wonderful and most of them conform to the Apple GUI usability standards.

One you dig in you’ll discover just how extensive everything really is with the OS and the software.
I’ve been building PCs for ten years now. In fact I’m about to upgrade my desktop pretty shortly here. I just bought a new 24″ monitor which I use with both my desktop and also with my macbook in dual display mode.
There is nothing wrong with either. But when it came to buying a laptop I wanted a macbook, knowing I could run both OSX and Windows on it, and linux if I want. But I haven’t installed windows on it yet. I just haven’t seen the point. All the software I want is available for mac, plus a whole bunch I never knew I wanted, which is only on a mac.

  8. I would LOVE to get a Mac.  Unfortunately, the programs I use the most don’t come in a Mac version (and I have actually checked and inquired).  Having to run Windows on a Mac seems to defeat the purpose of having a Mac in the first place.  If I have to run Windows, it’s a lot cheaper to do it on a PC!

  9. @roxics – Buying used scares the crap out of me. I’m not that computer savvy and the idea of buying a virus-ed up computer is awful.

  10. @josiebunny – Yup serious, there are no viruses. You just have to buy a mac that has good working hardware. Which shouldn’t be hard to find.

Macs keep their value really well, but there are some good deals out there. Like I said just make sure you get one that has a Core 2 Duo in it. Not a Core Duo or G5 or G4 but a Core “2” Duo.

  11. @roxics – I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks. :) Do you know of anywhere I could find used Macs other than craigslist? My experiences with that site have generally been unsavory.
